Pyrotechnics DnD 5E Spell

Hello magic casters of all shapes and sizes! welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 68th episode of our second level spell series. Today we’re looking at a spell some pretty cool name but often overlooked. Today we’re gonna be taking a look at dnd 5e pyrotechnics spell.

This spell is usable by the bard, sorcerer, wizard and the artificer and it is found in the elemental evil players companion. Which is a great read lots of our favorite spells are actually found in that book so i’d highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t already. In any case here let’s check out the mechanics you can better understand the way the spell operates.


The effect at a glance is as followed: Chose a mundane flame, it is extinguished and replaced by a firework or smoke. On a failed save, the firework blinds creatures within 10ft until the end of your next turn. The smoke spreads out in a 20ft radius, the smoke causes heavy obscurement, and lasts for 1 minute.

  • Range/Area: 60 ft (5 ft Cube)
  • Components: V, S
  • Duration: Instantaneous
  • School: Transmutation
  • Attack/Save: CON Save
  • Damage/Effect: Blinded

Your cast time is one action, the range is 60 feet although the area of effect is a 5 foot cube. The duration is instantaneous, the saving throw is constitution and on a success there is no effect.

The components are just verbal and somatic which is pretty nice and the school is a transmutation which makes sense because you’re taking a fire and turning into some other things. Now let’s take a look at the full description so you can better understand exactly the way the spell operates and go over some of the finer points.


As per this Pyrotechnics you can select an area of the flame which you are able to see and even that must be fit within the 5-foot cube within a specific range. You can also extinguishes the fire in that particular area, and also you may create either the fireworks or the smoke.

Fireworks: As per these fireworks the target would be exploded by the dazzling display of colors.  Of course each and every creature within 10 feet of a target must be succeeded on a Constitution saving throw  or else it must become blinded unless until the end of your upcoming turn.

Smoke: Here the thick black smoke could be spread out from a target within a 20-foot radius and also by moving around the corners. The particular area of this smoke has heavily been obscured. Even though the smoke could persists for a minute or else until the strongest wind disperses it.

Very cool stuff, i really like this spell it’s a good multifaceted utility spell and it really goes a long way in terms of control as well which is pretty dang nice. Let’s take a look at some alternative uses here and see if we can flex our creative brain a little bit.

Alternative Uses

So, i think the best way of using this is using it for escapes in all honesty, the ability to blind target is super helpful in terms of being able to move away without being noticed. Outside of that the smoke is a great thing if you have access to something like blind sense or if you already understand the layout quite well or if you’re just trying to cover your tracks so they don’t follow you exactly. So needless to say there’s quite a few interesting applications just in terms of movement.

Outside of that, if you’re gonna be stealing something this is gonna be a great way to help people lose track you much similar to the first example also you can really take advantage of that firework and use it for just more entertainment purposes. I think that is more than fine.
