You’d send all type of ribbons with the negative energy at a creature that you could see within a range. Unless until the target has been undead, and it should make a constitution saving throw, by taking a 5d12 necrotic damage on a failed save, or even half as much damage on the successful one too. Even though a target was killed by this damage raises up as the zombie at the start of your next turn.
Probably the zombie pursues whatever the creature which it can see that is closest of it. However the statistics for the zombie are mainly in the Monster Manual. Suppose, if you target an undead with this specific spell, then the target does not make a saving throw. Instead, roll 5d12. The target shall gain half the total as temporary hit points.
