Today we’re going to be taking a look at one of the most useful and popular first level spells out there. Today we’re gonna be taking a look at dnd 5e find familiar spell by raw this is just usable by the wizard, the warlocks can get access to it should they pick pack to the chain.

The cast time is one hour and it can be ritual casted for an additional 10 minutes. Most people do it this way, i don’t know why you wouldn’t. The range is 10 feet, the duration is instantaneous. The components are the somatic, material and the verbal. Meaning you have to gesture with one hand, speak forth an incantation and the material components are ten gold piece worth of charcoal incense and herbs that must be consumed by fire in a brass bezier.

So what that means is every time you cast one you gotta sacrifice 10 gold roughly that’s how most GM’s run it. The school is conjuration. With that brief overview out of the way let’s take a look at the full description it is a long one my goodness. Okay reads as followed.


In d&d 5e find familiar spell you’ve gained one of the best services of a familiar and a spirit which ca take an animal form that you’ve chosen. Such as bat, cat, crab, frog (toad), hawk, Lizard, Octopus, owl, Poisonous Snake, fish (quipper), rat, raven, Sea Horse, Spider, or even Weasel.

Normally, your familiar behave an independent of you, but of course it’s always been obeyed your commands. So, in a combat, it will roll its own initiative and also performs on its personal/own turn. This spell will be disappeared whenever this familiar would drop to 0 Hit points and it even leaves no physical form behind it. But it can be visible after you cast this dnd spell again.

At the time of your familiar is within a distance of 100 feet of you, you able to communicate to it telepathically. In an addition, like an action, you can able to see through any of your familiar’s eyes and also hear what it  hear’s according to their capability and they hear until your next starting turn, and also gains some of the benefits of any special senses which familiar actually has. At this time, you’re unable to hear (deaf) and unable to see (blind) with regard to your own senses.

I tried to do it all in one article but it just didn’t workout and i am still trying to figure out the details as to why it didn’t work but for now i’ll just have to do a bunch of smaller ones. In any case that’s about how this works. Let’s take a look at some alternative uses i could think up.

Alternative Uses

So, the primary alternative use for your familiar is taking advantage of the help action. What the help action does is it at least within combat, it allows your familiar to distract the foe long enough for you to get an attack with advantage. Alternatively to help out you can also be used to your advantage and saving throws and as for that reason why this is one of the most popular spell choices in the game.

You essentially get free advantage which is super nice. Outside of that your familiar can take other actions as well namely ability through or ability checks and saving throws so hypothetically let’s say you deal with the cat familiar and there’s a guard blocking a door.

First and foremost you can look through their senses to scope out the situation before your party gets directly involved and a cat fairly inconspicuous creature as well and then you could also have it make a potential sleight of hand check to try and steal the key firmly guard.

Then on a success you know this is your party a lot of time, a lot of risk and honestly i just really like it. Then there’s also the role-playing potential into in addition to all of that. The limits for this spell are really up to the person using it and their experience with it and how courteous your DM is.
