Hello magic casters of all shapes and sizes! welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking in to the 13th episode of our 2nd level spell series. today we are going to be taking a look at a pretty cool one in terms of role play that offers a decent on mechanical benefits as well.
Today we are talking about the dnd 5e calm emotions spell which is what it sounds like in kind of a way but its name makes it sound a hell of a lot badass than it really is. It is usable by the Bard and the cleric which makes sense when you really think about it and it is found in the good old players handbook.
In any case if you haven’t check out our other spells list yet then please visit this page. Now let’s move along to the mechanics and kind of talk about this dnd 5e spell a little bit more.
- Level: 2nd
- Casting Time: 1 Action
- Range/Area: 60 ft (20 ft Radius)
- Components: V, S
- Duration: 1 Minute (Concentration)
- School: Enchantment
- Attack/Save: CHA Save
- Damage/Effect: Charmed
Your cast time is one action, the range in which you cast it is 60 feet but the area of effect is a 20-foot radius so bear that in mind. The duration is a whole minute and it is concentration so please bear that in mind. The components are Somatic and Verbal meaning you have to gesture with one hand and speak forth an incantation and the school is enchantment.
The Effect at a glance is as followed; Each of the humanoid within a specific range shall make a charisma(CHA) save, on a failed save you pick 1 of two effects and those effects get applied to them: Suppress any type of effect causing a target in order to be charmed or frightened. So really good.
Or the second one: Make a target indifferent about the creatures of your choice which it is hostile toward. Of course this indifference ends if the target is attacked or harmed by a spell or if it witnesses any of its friends being harmed. Which makes sense logically.
Within that brief summary out of the way let’s take a look at its full description so you can just establish a better idea of how the spell actually functions. Also read our hold person 5e spell.
In this d&d Calm Emotions 5e spell you do attempt to suppress the strong emotions in a specific group of people. Each of the humanoid within a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point that you chose within a range should make a charisma saving throw a creature which can chose to be fail this saving throw if it wishes. But if the creature fails its saving throw then chose one of the below mentioned two effects.
Obviously, you can suppress any type of effect which is causing a target to either be charmed or frightened. Whenever this spell ends and any suppressed effect resumes, provided which its duration hasn’t been expired in a meantime.
Did you know about crusader’s mantle spell 5e
So, alternatively you able to make a target which is indifferent about creatures of your choice which it is hostile toward. Any how this type of indifference will end when the target is attacked or else harmed by a spell or even if it witnesses any of its friends being harmed. So, whenever the spell ends, the creature would normally become hostile again, unless until the DM rules otherwise.
Such a fantastic stuff. I really like it needless to say there’s a ton of role-playing potential here but also worth noting both of the charmed and frightened conditions are two of the most detrimental conditions that can really just change the entire scope of the combat you’re running, literally changes everything.
So this spell’s ability to get those two conditions is awesome and of itself and being able to stop aggression is also pretty at dang sweet. Now, let’s move along to some alternative uses. Also check out d&d lesser restoration.
The first one i would like to point out in 5e calm emotions uses section is this is incredibly useful if you know you’re going up against things they can charm or frighten people. A lot of undead for example have at least one of these two abilities a lot of fake and charm stuff of that nature. So, i just think it’s always good to have in your back pocket.
Another interesting use is calming down hostility in an attempt to make an arrangement or a possible friendship moving forward. one of my favorite things to do in D&D is to actually put the party in fairly awkward circumstances where they didn’t, inherently do anything wrong but they’re still being punished regardless.
Essentially framing them if you want to look at it that way and this spell would be great way of defusing those high attentions. On a side note however, this could be a very mischievous spell for a dungeon master to use. What i mean by that is let’s say you’re facing and a big bad.
You know it’s all on the line you just wanna to fight him, take him to the ground you’re tired of them. Pushing you around rubbing your nose and everything and when hits you with calm emotions and then he just chills out relaxes, pours himself a cup of tea, sits there for a minute looking at you waving.
As soon as it ends you recast, i just think it’d be hilarious. There’s nothing in this spell about remaking that charisma save at any point, so once it’s decided you’re stuck with it unless naturally you can get harmed. If you’re also like to read our detect thoughts 5e then proceed with this link.
