Hello magic casters of all shapes and sizes! welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking in to the 9th episode of our 2nd level spells series. Today we’re gonna be taking a look at dnd 5e spell beast sense which i really like honestly i see a lot of potential upside for the spell. It is usable by the druid and the ranger which is kind of cool cuz bark skin is also usable by the druid and the ranger and it was a previous one so it’s just really weird how the fates don’t do with this side if these things. Fantastic it is also much alike bark skin found in the player’s handbook which is pretty eerie but pretty cool as well. In any case with that intro out of the way unless take a look at its mechanics.
- Casting Time: 1 Action (Ritual)
- Range: Touch
- Duration: 1 Hour (Concentration)
- Components: Somatic
- School: Divination
Your cast time is the standard one action but it can also be ritual casted for an additional 10 minutes which is really handy i love ritual spells. The range is a touch which is really good as well. The duration is one hour and it is sadly concentration so bear that in your mind as you’re using it. The effect at a glance is as followed: You can use actions to perceive through a beasts senses. Which is really neat. The components are just somatic which implies you can kind of cast this a little bit stealthily. You just have to gesture with one hand if you don’t what somatic means in d&d 5e terms. And the school is divination which kind of makes sense in a weird way. In any case with that out of the way let’s take a look at its full description to just flesh it out a little bit better.
You touch a willing beast. So for a particular duration of the spell, you can make to use your action to see through the beast’s eyes and also hear what it actually hears, and also continue to do so until you use your action to return to your normal senses.
Did you know about sense emotion 5e
Very cool stuff! honestly once again i really liked it, i really see the potential upside. Before we get this specific uses a couple things i’d like to point out; the first and foremost is unlike a lot of the other beast related spells this does not cap you at a certain intelligence modifier what that means is you can use this on more intelligent beasts to equal effect.
Secondly it has to be a willing beast so it can’t just be some random beast you find on the side of the road unless you manage to befriend that random beast somehow and thirdly it kind of implies that you can’t access extra sensory organs is strictly says you see through its eyes and hear what it hears but if as some kind of organ you don’t have that allows it to perceive vibrations in the ground then probably not allowed. However as a DM i’d allow it personally i’m just let you know by raw your DM could say no to you and they could be right on the money so i would really really suggest running it past them beforehand. Fantastic with that disclaimer out of the way let’s take a look at some alternative uses here.
So what i really like is just using the beast of scope of play so pick a beast that belongs there something like a rat or a spider. Have them go there before and just pursue through its senses see what’s up. Secondly you could cast this on shall we say an enemy’s cat or dog or animal companion that you temporarily befriend and you could use it to locate their hideout and several other treasure troves along the way depending on kind of what your DM rules. Thirdly this is a great way to get dark vision just saying cheap dark vision tons of added benefits to it. I just really like it great for spying as well through that same kind of assumption.
