Hello magic casters of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 3rd episode of our first level spell series. Today we’re going to be taking a look at the animal friendship 5e spell usable by the bard, druid and ranger and found in the ever popular players handbook. Let’s take a look at some quick mechanics here.
- Level: 1
- Casting Time: 1 Action
- Range/Area: 30 ft
- Components: V, S, M (a morsel of food)
- Duration: 24 Hours
- School: Enchantment
- Attack/Save: WIS Save
- Damage/Effect: Charmed
The cast time is one action, the range is 30ft, the duration is 24 hours which is quite impressive. The components are somatic, material and verbal. Meaning you have to gesture with one hand, there is a material component in this case more so of food and a verbal component meaning you have to speak forth an incantation. The school is unsurprisingly enchantment.
The effect at a glance is as followed: Chose a beast within range with an intelligence of 3 or lower. After the beast fails a wisdom saving throw, the beast is charmed. The spell ends once the spells duration is over, or if the beast is attacked by yourself or a companion. Essentially from the fire. At higher levels You can gain one additional beast per spell level. Now lets take a look at the full description here so we are all on the same page.
This spell is always let you convince the beast which you would mean it for no harm. You can also select the beast that you’re able to see within a range. Also it must be seen and hear you. Suppose, the beast’s Intelligence is 4 or else more than it then the spell will fail. Or else, the beast must be succeeded on the wisdom saving throw or else be charmed by you for the spell’s particular duration. Suppose, if either you or else one of your companions those harms the target, where the spell will end.

At Higher Levels: Whenever you cast this Animal Friendship DnD 5E Spell by using the spell slot of 2nd level or higher, also you can affect an additional beast for the sake of each slot above the 1st level.
The charmed condition by the way is as followed: A charmed creature can’t attack the charmer or target the charmer with harmful abilities or magical effects. The charmer has advantage on any ability check to interact socially with a creature. So you can see how this could really help you out especially in those more forced centered campaigns. That being said, let’s take a look at some alternative uses here.
One of my personal favorites is convincing or using this spell to convince in armor guarding something that you mean it no harm and that’s it will not attack you, it will not bark, do anything like that. Alternatively if you have a very high animal handling modifier, you could very effectively use this to potentially turn a NPCs animal companion on them or at the very least give the NPC the enfreshen that its animal will not be able to aided in the upcoming fight. I really like this spell, i find an incredible useful.
If you have any useful any alternative uses for it, i would love to hear them down in the comments below and i know everyone else reading this article would as well. That being said, i hope you all have a great day.
