Hello zoologists of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for clicked on 24th episode of our beast series. Today we’re taking a look at the dnd 5e rat monsters which is one of the more interesting familiars and also provides a very good kind of subtle hint as to things to come, i’ll talk about that a little bit later on as well.
So the rat is considered to be cr0 that is to say it’s not really meant to be much of a challenge. At least in its current iteration and i just found in the basic rule set. It’s found in the variety of different books from the DMG, PHB just kind all over the place. Al though further ado let’s take a look at its actual stats here.
So the rat is considered to be a tiny beast that is unaligned. It has an AC of 10 and one hit point calculated by rolling a d4 and subtracting one. It also has a movement speed of about 20 feet. Which is actually relatively low. I thought it’d be a lot higher but i guess not.
- Type: Tiny Beast, unaligned
- AC: 10
- HP: 1(1D4-1)
- Speed: 20ft
Taking a look at its stats here. You’ll see he’s certainly not strong, certainly not smart and certainly not charismatic. Outside of that he’s not really good at anything.
- STR: 2(-4)
- DEX: 11(+0)
- CON: 9(-1)
- INT: 2(-4)
- WIS: 10(+0)
- CHA: 4(-3)
Taking a look at his senses…he has darkvision of 30 feet which is okay and the passive perception of 10 which is certainly isn’t the worst we’ve seen so far. He also has access to keen smell which grants him advantage of perception checks related to smell. Which is pretty cool.
Keen Smell: The rat dnd monster has an advantage on the Wisdom (Perception) checks which could rely on smell.
Now a lot of you are gonna notice there’s no stealth modifier here which i consider to be pretty disappointing but whatever it’s just the way it’s written. Now let’s take a look at his actions here.
You can take one action and is a melee weapon attack referred to his bite. It is just a straight d20 roll to determine whether or not it’s a miss. Reach a five feet because it’s melee. Can only target one target and deals one piercing damage.
Bite: By using the bite attack this monster can make a Melee Weapon Attack: +0 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1 piercing damage.
Now i would use the rat is a precursor things to come. For example a rat could be a great indicator of zombies but if you want to get even more creative a rat could be evidence of other rats.
For example the cranium rat or the diseased rat or the various swarms in there of. I’m sure there’s a couple other different variants but those are the first two that come to mind. So it could be an interesting kind of indicator.
