Hello zoologists of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking in to the 39th episode of our beast series. Today we have a great low level monster for your party to face off against when they’re just getting used to the game but still want something they can hit them a little bit hard. Today we’re gonna be taking a look at the giant rat.
We’ve actually covered a lot of rats in this series so far so it’s pretty interesting stuff, wizards is pretty creative not really but whatever. In any case the giant rat is found under the basic rule set and it is a CR 1/8 creature and provides 25 experience points on a kill. That being said let’s take a quick moment and check out its stats.
The giant rat is considered to be a small beast that is unaligned. He also has 12 AC and 7 hit points calculated by rolling 2d6 and a speed of 30 feet which puts benign with medium creatures.
- Type: Small beast, unaligned
- AC: 12
- HP: 7(2D6)
- Speed: 30ft
Taking a look at its stats. You’ll notice he is quite dexterous but not really particularly good at anything else.
- STR: 7(-2)
- DEX: 15(+2)
- CON: 11(+0)
- INT: 2(-4)
- WIS: 10(+0)
- CHA: 4(-3)
Under senses you’ll see darkvision upto 60 feet which is nice and a passive perception of 10 which is okay. Now let’s checkout his other traits here.
So the giant rat gets access to keen smell and pack tactics.
Keen Smell: The giant rat in dnd 5e has an advantage on the wisdom (perception) checks which rely on the smell.
Pack Tactics: As per this trait the dnd rat monster has an advantage on the attack roll which is against to a creature if it is at least one of the rat’s allies is within 5ft., of a creature and also the ally is not Incapacitated.
Now let’s quickly check out his actions here.
Bite: By using this bite attack this dnd monster can make a Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2) piercing damage.
Very nice stuff. Now if you’ll notice this whole stat block is basically identical to the disease to giant rat without that second part on the actions that inflict long-term poison damage.
Attributes Of Giant Rat 5E Monster
|Roll 0||Bite 1d20 + 4 1d4+2|
|Senses||Darkvision 60 Ft.|
That being said! however…. I think it would be a good idea to mix up the two. A couple diseased rats with a larger amount of just regular giant rats. That way you could provide some diversity, they all kind of look the same so the party wouldn’t really know until they got bit by one.
That being said let me know how you would use them down beneath in the comment section. Also be sure to mention any thoughts, questions, comments, or concerns you have regarding the giant rat. That being said! i hope you have a great day and as always happy researching my friends.
