Giant Lizard Variant 5E

We’re looking at the giant lizard variant 5e it just found in the basic rules same as giant lizard and it is considered to be cr one quarter and it provides 50 experience points on a kill CR:1/4(50XP). Now let’s take a quick look at its mechanics here and just discuss it a little bit further.

Stats

So the giant lizard is considered to be a large beast and it is unaligned. It has AC of 12, also 19 hit points calculated by the rolling 3d10 and adding 3, speed of 30 feet and climb speed of 30 feet.

  • AC: 12
  • HP: 19(3d10+3)
  • Speed: 30ft, climb 30ft

Now taking a look at his stats there you’ll notice quite strong a little bit dexterity, a little bit con but outside of that pretty normal.

  • STR: 15(+2)
  • DEX: 12(+1)
  • CON: 13(+1)
  • INT: 2(-4)
  • WIS: 10(+0)
  • CHA: 5(-3)

Under senses you’ll see 30 feet of darkvision and a passive perception of 10. That is identical to the giant lizard the original version. There’s no modification within this area, what is different is what comes next.

Other Traits

Let’s check out its other traits. So the giant lizard can have one or both of these potentially and that’s what provides the variant quality.

So either hold breath: Which let’s it hold its breath for about 15 minutes and gives it an additional 30 feet swim speed which is pretty cool.

Or Spider Climb: Can climb difficult surfaces without needing a check. which is pretty cool it should have had that anyway is to be honest but whatever i suppose there’s a ton of different kinds of lizards out there.

So both of these make sense to me personally and i find it is much better to go with a variant and let’s take a look at this action really quick.

Actions

So much like the original giant lizard the giant lizard variant takes a bite attack.

Bite: Melee weapon attack: +4 to hit, reach of 5 feet, one target and deals 6 piercing damage on a hit calculated by rolling 1d8 and adding 2.

I much much much much prefer this version. I get those other traits might not offer a whole lot in combat but out of combat it makes the world of difference and i think would make a great mount if it had both of those. Arguably amount you could charge a lot of money for or offer up as a quest reward or give it like some cool elite NPC guards or maybe some elite adventurers that your party aspires to be.
