Hello zoologists of all shapes and sizes! welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking in to the 59th episode of our beast series. We’re looking at the giant frog monster 5e today and man i love this guy so cool definitely gonna figure out how to work them into various settings absolutely love them.
This giant frog is found under the basic rule set and it is considered to be a cr 1 quarter and provides 50 experience points on a kill cr:1/4(50xp) and let me tell you if you’re facing these guys as a player. You’re really gonna want to deal with them quick. Especially at those early levels, then you’re not fun. That being said let’s take a quick look at his stats here.
So the giant frog is considered to be a medium beast and that is unaligned. AC of 11, it has 18 hit points calculated by rolling 4d8 and a speed of 30ft and a swim speed of 30 feet as well. So very cool stuff.
- Type: Medium Beast, Unaligned
- AC: 11
- HP: 18(4d8)
- Speed: 30ft, swim 30ft
Taking a look at his stats here. You’ll notice nothing overly impressive. +1 to strength, +1 to dexterity, +0 to con, -4 to intelligence, +0 to wisdom and a -4 to charisma as well.
- STR: 12(+1)
- DEX: 13(+1)
- CON: 11(+0)
- INT: 2(-4)
- WIS: 10(+0)
- CHA: 3(-4)
Under skills you’ll see a perception increase of +2 and a stealth increase of +3 which is nice. Under senses you’ll see 30 feet of darkvision and a passive perception of 12. Let’s take a quick look at his other traits here.
The frog has access to amphibious which allowed to breathe in both water and air. And also the standing leap which is the frog’s ability to long jump up to 20 feet and also high jump up to10 feet with or without a running start which is pretty dang a great.
Amphibious: This giant frog monster able to breathe air and also the water.
Standing Leap: As per this standing leap trait the frog can long jump up to 20 ft. and it also able to do high jump which is up to 10 ft., with or without a running start.
Now looking at all these stats you’ve covered so far. It might not seem super amazing. But let’s take a look at its actions here.
So the frog is two different actions, Now the first being a bite attack.
Bite: By having this bite attack this dnd giant frog monster can make a Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., it can only target one target. It also Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) piercing damage, and even its target is Grappled on a hit (escape DC 11). But until unless this grapple ends, then the target is almost restrained and also the frog can’t bite another target.
And then the next turn, you can do the swallow action.
Swallow: As per this swallow the frog able to make single bite attack which is almost against to the small or the smaller target it is grappling. Suppose, if the attack hits and then the target has been swallowed, and then the grapple will end.
Actually, the swallowed target is blinded and even restrained and then it has total cover against to the attacks and also the other effects outside the frog, and then of course it can take 5 (2d4) acid damage at a start of each of the frog’s turns.
Even though the frog able to have only a single specific target has been swallowed at simultaneous time. However if the frog dies and a swallowed creature is no longer to be Restrained by it and then it can escape from the corpse using 5 ft. of Movement, exiting prone.
So, i would personally alter this wear medium beast could be affected as well. I know thematically that doesn’t make a lot of sense because it is a medium beast in of itself. But i think that would make encounters way more interesting with this.
That being said though, it would be absolutely hilarious to have an evil kind of gnome NPC, i kind of get chased down by a horde of giant frogs and like a climatic satisfying ending to a kind of minor character arc. But that being said i would kind of up to danger intensity by making us so medium beasts could be swallowed as well.
I think that’d be kind of cool and then you could really ascent your players up for some very cool quest lines involving hordes of frogs just decimating small villages. Although once again i suppose you could just do that with gnomes but that whatever.
Now in terms of another way to weasel these into a campaign have them being ridden like some form of fake organization or like the nome king’s guards for example…
I think that’s be kind of funny because they really are quite for metaball and if they were to be taken his mounts i feel like this would be a great mount because you could potentially influence action economy in a very profane way by just virtually removing a person from combat. Naturally that would only really work on people who would do poorly against grapples but still pretty interesting stuff.
