Hello zoologists of all shapes and sizes! welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for clicked on to the 57th episode of our beast series. Today we’re going to be taking a look at the first real flying mount we’ve ever really covered about in this series.
We’re looking at the giant bat monster 5e. I really like these guys from both a thematic and a mechanical angle and I hope you’ll get a kick out of them as well. This giant bat is found under the basic rule set and it is considered to be a cr: 1quarter and it provides 50 experience points on a kill. cr:1/4(50xp) Now without further ado let’s take a quick moment here and check out its stats.
So the giant bat is considered to be a large beast, that is unaligned. That means that creatures up to a medium size can mount them. It has an AC of 13 which is actually quite high. 22 hit points calculated by a straight roll 4d10 and also 10 feet of normal movement and a 60 feet of flying speed. Very cool stuff, very quick.
- Type: Large Beast, Unaligned
- AC: 13
- HP: 22(4d10)
- Speed: 10ft, fly 60ft
Taking a look at his stats you’ll notice he is incredibly dexterous and quite strong as well which is nice.
- STR: 15(+2)
- DEX: 16(+3)
- CON: 11(+0)
- INT: 2(-4)
- WIS: 12(+1)
- CHA: 6(-2)
Taking a look at his senses you’ll see 60 feet of a blind sight and a passive perception of 11. Now let’s take a look at his other traits here.
The flying back gets access to echolocation and also keen hearing.
Echolocation: Actually, the giant bat in dnd 5e unable to use its Blindsight because of Deafened.
Keen Hearing: This bat has keen hearing as well. As per this the bat monster has an advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing.
Very cool stuff and makes logical sense for a bat to have. Now let’s take a quick look at it’s actions here. The bat only has a one action and that is a bite attack.
Bite: By using this bite attack this dnd 5e monster can make a Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., it can only target one creature. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage.
I really do like the bat, i would probably use them either as a kind of way to wrap up a quick underdark adventure like a way for them to escape the underdark. Either that or maybe even as an enemy kind of mount for example like let’s say a marauding horde of goblins that rides on giant bats and hyenas for example pillage the open planes at night. Something like that would be pretty cool.
