Ape Monster DnD 5E

Hello zoologists of all shapes and sizes! Welcome to my spellbook and thank you so much for checking out the 77th episode in our beasts series. Today we’re looking at the Ape which is found in the basic rules and it is the first of the cr one-half beasts we’re going to be covering and a nets you a mighty fine 100 experience points upon defeating them CR:1/2(100XP). Let’s dive right into its stats.

Stats

Now wizards of the coast considers the ape to be a medium beast, that is unaligned. Although most apes in nature are quite large but whatever. AC of 12, hit points of 19 calculated by rolling 3d8 and adding 6. A speed of 30 feet and a climb speed of 30 feet as well.

Taking a look at the stats you’ll notice that these are quite nice especially compared to all of the cr1 quarters and below we’ve been covering. Clocking in and a whopping +3 for strength very nice.

  • CON: 14(+2)
  • INT: 6(-2)
  • WIS: 12(+1)
  • CHA: 7(-2)

His skills are certainly nothing to take lightly either, having a +5 to athletics and a +3 to perception. Giving him a passive perception score of 13.

Actions

Now let’s quickly checkout his actions. The ape has access to multi attack which allowed to take two fist attacks per action.

Multiattack: The ape monster can make two fist attacks

Fist: The fist attack is considered to be a melee weapon attack:+5 to hit, reach of 5 ft., one target. and deals six bludgeoning damage on a hit, calculated by rolling 1d6 and adding 3.

  • hit: 6(1d6+3) bludgeoning damage

Rock: The ape also has a ranged weapon attack known as rock. +5 to hit, range 25ft but can be extended up to 50 ft. if you’re willing to take that disadvantage. Can only target one target and deals 6 bludgeoning damage as well calculated by rolling the exact same 1d6 and adding 3.

Very cool stuff the ape is pretty cool. So in terms of how i would use the ape in my games! i’d honestly have them be either a animal companion for an NPC potentially a bid bad or maybe minor big bad as it were or even have them attack in groups or have them passively be in the background to kind of help keep that adventuring party in check and if they go on murder hobo a group of half a dozen or so apes to descend down on them and just give them a world of hurt.
