Entertainer Background 5E

Hello adventurers! Welcome to my guide and thank you so much for checking out the 15th episode of our background series. Today we are going to be talking about the dnd 5e entertainer background. This was a very very popular background during the early days of 5e. It was kind of the entertainer, the charlatan, the criminal and couple others the most common ones you saw. The entertainer was most commonly used in one shots at least that’s what we saw in the adventures league circuits a lot.

It just seemed like a fun way to play a character certainly tended more towards rogues and bards. however i suppose you could really play it as anything else. But those were definitely the two most common. If you haven’t checked dnd backgrounds table yet and now if you would like to then proceed with the given link. In any case let’s quickly go over its description here.

Overview

As an entertainer background 5e you have versatile skills such as dance, musical skills and all types of emotions such as laughter, anger and so on. That’s how you thrive before an audience. Because of your skills you can easily get to know how to entrance them, entertain them, and inspire them too.

Many audiences wants to enjoy your skills mostly your poetics able to stir the hearts of the audiences those who hear you and also you can make awakening grief or joy, even laughter or anger. You also have musical skills, so that you can raise their spirits or else captures their sorrow just by your music.

You also have the dancing skills and those of your dance steps are captivate and your humor would cut to the quick. So being an entertainer 5e you can do anything with your art but finally your art is your life.

Feature: Entertainer Routines

Basically, a good dnd entertainer is a versatile, spicing up each and every performance by lots of different routines. So you can choose one to three routines or you can simply roll on the table mentioned below for defining your expertise as an entertainer.

It also provides this nice little d10 table for whatever your entertainer routine might be, be you an actor, dancer, fire-eater, jester, juggler, instrumentalist, poet, singer, storyteller or tumbler.

D10Entertainer Routine
1Actor
2Dancer
3Fire-eater
4Jester
5Juggler
6Instrumentalist
7Poet
8Singer
9Storyteller
10Tumbler

Arguably pick whatever you want doesn’t really so much matter in the long stretch, however it adds a pretty good chunk of flavor to your character. Let’s quickly take a look at its mechanics here.

Mechanics

Under skill proficiencies you gain acrobatics and performance which of course makes sense. Under tool proficiencies you gain the disguise kit and also one type of musical instrument. Under equipment you gain a musical instrument, the favor of an admirer and that can really be anything ranging from a love letter, a lock of hair, trinket, ring etc, a costume and a pouch containing 25 gold piece. Which puts it just above that ten average.

  • Skill Proficiencies: Acrobatics, Performance
  • Tool Proficiencies: Disguise kit, one type of musical instrument
  • Languages: None
  • Equipment: One musical instrument (it is one of your choices), the favor of an admirer (love letter, lock of hair, or trinket), also a costume, and a belt pouch containing 15 gp.

Something i do want to quickly point out here, the costume it’s kind of whatever you want it to be, in the past it was super super popular to pick a costume with a mask that covered your face, that way you could kind of create a persona. Really cool stuff, i’ve seen that done quite a bit with various degrees of success depending on how well you roll. But mechanically overall this is quite a strong background. Now let’s take a look at its feature, by popular demand.

Feature: By Popular Demand

As an entertainer you capable to find a place to perform, basically in an inn or in tavern but possibly by the circus, at a theater or even in a noble’s court. Although, at such type of places, you could receive free lodging and the food of a modest or the comfortable standards (depends on the quality of the establishment of course), as possibly as you perform for each night.

So in an addition, your performance can make you something of a local figure. But whenever the strangers recognize you in a town at where you’ve performed, they do typically take a liking to you.

I really do like this feature, it’s very similar to a lot of the others ones we’ve covered in the past. Well at least a handful of them, there’s a couple in the future we’ll be going over as well where it’s quite similar. it’s just really great.

The mechanical benefit outright is that you get free lodging and food which is certainly nice to have especially if you are surrounded by a lot of small towns, villages, or even larger cities and especially if there’s a town guard that goes around patrolling you stopping for sleeping in the streets stuff like that. Really good stuff, really good way to save money.

But the less direct benefit is you are part of the rumor mill and you are able to have something of a local celebrity status, which is certainly nice. It’s not quite like it would be for the functionary that we’ve gone over earlier where you can kind of force your way into people’s lives, using your legal authority to justify it.

But this is where people want to have you around they want to confide in you they think you’re a good time and they’re likely to drop their guard around you. I think that is probably the best thing about this particular feature. In any case let’s move on to its variant and its suggested characteristics back to back.

Variant Entertainer: Gladiator

Basically, a gladiator is like as much an entertainer as any type of minstrel or circus performer has trained to make the arts of the combat into the spectacle where the crowd can enjoy. Of course, this type of flashy combat is one of your entertainer routine, even though you might have some skills such as a tumbler or an actor.

So, using your by Popular Demand feature and you can easily find a place to perform in any kind of places which would feature combat for an entertainment-perhaps a gladiatorial arena of else the secret pit fighting club. Any how, you can easily replace musical instrument in your equipment package by an inexpensive bu an unusual weapon, like a trident or else net.

Suggested Characteristics

In dnd 5e backgrounds the entertainers have capability to capture and hold an audience’s attention, so that they ted to be have flamboyant or the forceful personalities. Of course they’re inclined towards the romantic and frequently cling to high-minded ideals regards to practice of an art and even the appreciation of the beauty.

For this example, the personality trait i went with ” Whenever i come to a new place, i collect local rumors and spread gossip.”

1I know a story relevant to almost every situation.
2Whenever I come to a new place, I collect local rumors and spread gossip.

2Tradition: The stories, legends, and songs of the past must never be forgotten, for they teach us who we are. (Lawful)
3Creativity: The world is in need of new ideas and bold action. (Chaotic)
4Greed: I'm only in it for the money and fame. (Evil)
5People: I like seeing the smiles on people's faces when I perform. That's all that matters. (Neutral)
6Honesty: Art should reflect the soul; it should come from within and reveal who we really are. (Any)

Bond

Under bond “I want to be famous, whatever it takes.”

D6Bond
1My instrument is my most treasured possession, and it reminds me of someone I love.
2Someone stole my precious instrument, and someday I'll get it back.
3I want to be famous, whatever it takes.
4I idolize a hero of the old tales and measure my deeds against that person's.
5I will do anything to prove myself superior to my hated rival.
6I would do anything for the other members of my old troupe.

“I’ll do anything to win fame and renown.”

D6Flaw
1I'll do anything to win fame and renown.
2I'm a sucker for a pretty face.
3A scandal prevents me from ever going home again. That kind of trouble seems to follow me around.
4I once satirized a noble who still wants my head. It was a mistake that I will likely repeat.
5I have trouble keeping my true feelings hidden. My sharp tongue lands me in trouble.
6Despite my best efforts, I am unreliable to my friends.

Needless to say this is gonna be a pretty popular archetype you see with this background makes a lot of sense. However you can really play around with what their justification is. A good example would be maybe they’re an illegitimate child trying to find who their real parents are.

They feel the best way to do this is to make themselves as well known as possible hoping that their family will come out of the woodwork and meet them with open arms. Something to that effect being out in the spotlight also has its advantages from a dming standpoint.

If a party is making a scene then they are likely to be approached by influential figures for good or evil and those figures are likely to get the party involved in their innermost dealings. Which is super great, not to mention the gossip angle of this is a relatively underused part of 5e.

There’s lot of gossip tables you can find within the core rules as well as online that other people have made and just use your own if you really need to but looking for rumors is super useful and can provide a ton of exposition. Without the DM needing to make up a name for every single person in the bar and keep a running tab of what each individual NPC’s motivations are in life, what they do for living and why they’re doing it, it seems a little redundant.

Instead you can say while at the party or while they were celebrating your honor and chatting with you, you’re able to uncover that this particular family seems to have a tense relationship with this particular family involving this industry and it’s kind of a unspoken fact that things are about to escalate.

Something to that effect is just as good as sitting down with the tavern owner’s second cousin twice removed and casting all kinds of crazy spells on him trying to get him to spell the beans of his family. You know, i know which one i prefer personally but who knows whatever your DM style is i suppose go with it, i just know which one’s easier to keep track of on paper. In any case let’s take a look at my personal thoughts here.

Thoughts

Overall the entertainer arguably is still a very strong choice. It’s rather outshined by another background that we’ll be discussing soon enough. However if you’re not allowing the ravnica backgrounds this is one of the better ones out of the player’s handbook for sure.

Is it quite as good as the charlatan you know it depends on how you use it, the charlatan specializes in almost shifting attention away from them where the entertainer focuses attention on them directly. So in a lot of ways they are mirrored in each other you can make the same argument maybe with the athlete as well.

However i think they’re all strong in their own given right and as long as they work with your character and don’t clash thematically i think it’s a really solid option. Something i would like to factor in is maybe some people don’t like your act. You know maybe amongst the more conservative crowd they feel like you’re something of a fool.

However that would factor into what kind of an act you have, so just bear that in mind that not everyone will like your particular cup of tea, even if you roll really well on your performance checks.

Conclusion

That being said, let me know what you think of the entertainer down beneath in the comment section, be sure to mention any thoughts, questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or even pulp culture references of your own. In any case i hope you all have a great day and as always happy adventuring.
